As part of National Care Leavers' Week (26-30 October) we have produced 5 press releases, each one addressing a key issue facing care leavers today:

My Own Home
Let Me Learn
It's My Family
I'm an Adult Now?
Who Cares For Me?

John Kemmis, Chief Executive of Voice, states:

'Children and young people leaving care face a number of barriers. Care Leavers are often forced to live on their own, with very little support as soon as they reach 18 years of age. Unlike most young people, care leavers do not have the luxury of getting it wrong. Once they have left their foster placement to live on their own, there is no going back.

Additionally, many care-leavers do not receive the financial and practical support to complete further or higher education, resulting in them having to withdraw from courses and take lower paid jobs, with limited long-term prospects.

We want to see an increase in the level of support to Care Leavers, in particular around living independently and education and we hope these briefings will not only raise awareness of the issues, but also lead to a more constructive dialogue on how to improve the lives and outcomes for care leavers.'

In the build up to National Care Leavers' Week 2009, Voice, in partnership with Arts Council England, Tate Britain, John Lyons Charity and Ealing Council, has organised an exhibition of artwork that explores young people's experiences of their care and their aspirations for the future.

The exhibition opens tomorrow at the 12 Star Gallery, 8 Storey's Gate, Westminster SW1P 3AT. Entitled Home from Home, it is an opportunity for these young people to exhibit their talents in art and photography, celebrate their diverse experiences and backgrounds and share their experiences and aspirations with a wider audience. For more information, visit the 12 Star Gallery website here.
