"Voice and NCB, together will launch an alliance to promote […] a truly child-centred care system in this country. The organisations involved would both pool their commitment and resources, but also seek modest resources to pursue agreed goals." Start with the Child, Stay with the Child, Voice 2004

This was the commitment made by Voice and its key partner in the Blueprint project, NCB (National Children's Bureau), in the 2004 project report. Since that report was published, Voice has endeavoured to bring together an Alliance of individuals and organisations, from the voluntary and statutory sectors alike, to speak with one voice for a child-centred care system.

In 2009 we re-launched the Alliance, bringing together a raft of organisations (see list below). Our objective is to promote the embedding of child-centred care into the policy and practice of statutory, public and private bodies who either provide services or are responsible for the development and implementation of policy for children and young people looked after by the state.

  • Putting the needs of the child first and at the centre of practice
  • Recognising and valuing children's diversity and individuality
  • Listening to and communicating effectively with children
  • Recognising and valuing the relationships that matter to the child
  • Recognising and upholding children's rights
  • Facilitating children's individual and collective involvement in decisions
  • Focussing on the child over organisational considerations
  • Supporting and developing the workforce to be child-centred

Our members include: Action for Children, A National Voice, Barnardo's, British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF), CAFCASS, Catch-22, Children England, Family Rights Group, National Association of Independent Reviewing Officers (NAIRO), National Care Leavers Assocation, National Children's Bureau (NCB), National Youth Advocacy Service (NCAS), The Adolescent and Children's Trust (TACT), The Children's Society, The Fostering Network, The Who Cares? Trust, Voice and Young Minds.
